The Corner of Eva and Elizabeth
Fall 2020
Revit, Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, Lumion
The site for the mixed-use project is located just south of a quickly developing downtown Austin, Texas. Eva and Elizabeth St.'s intersection has become a transition point between the city's future development goals and the single-family homes that many native Austins hold dear. The project generates a unique opportunity for the community to expand, grow, and inspire new members, whether temporary or permanent. Using a shared common space, the existing community will diversify with the new members and simultaneously embrace the community's culture, traditions, and heritage. Through the cafe and the display spaces above, the neighborhood is given a place to come and express their art, ideas, and voice to the new members and introduces new areas for local businesses to launch. Using heavy timber as the structural material allows the building to create lively authentic spaces with exposed CLT slab ceilings and other glulam structural members. The wooden screens provide privacy for the residences on the upper floors of the building while also allowing light to transmit out the community. This feature, along with the balcony, provides an opportunity for new residents to interact with the surrounding neighborhood and have their presence felt. Through the design, both the developmental-minded bureaucrats and community-focused residents will benefit through the growth and protection of the native culture.
