Maryland State Library Staircase
Defining Space
Spring 2019
Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop
Focusing on the main reading room of the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, this staircase was designed to divide the space into individual zones to offer various experiences for reading and exhibition. Following the grid established by the curtain wall's frame achieves a rhythm that allows the overall area to have an order to an otherwise vast and untamed space. In addition, the staircase offers continuity to the room, creating less disruption by using materials found in the pre-existing area, maintaining its original integrity. Dynamic shifts in light emanating from breaks in the concrete walls and the translucent risers produce distinctive spaces while also increasing the contrast between elements, helping visually impaired occupants use the stair and the spaces.
